Traditionally, a mala consists of 108 stones, but it can also be made shorter; the important rule to follow is that they are multiples of nine. A short mala with 8 mm stones allows for easy counting during meditation and is also easier to wear, being lighter than the classic "full mala" with 108 stones of 0,315" (8 mm).
